Your learner in the Compass Classroom

Compass Independent School offers a learning approach that emphasises independence, curiosity, collaboration and responsibility.

Children and young people learn through a mix of self-directed work, small group coaching, hands-on tasks and outdoor experiences.

This requires children and young people to:

  • safely participate in hands-on, creative and open-ended learning activities;

  • work independently and know when to ask for help;

  • work with teachers in one-to-one and small group coaching sessions; and

  • to collaborate with peers.

Social and Emotional Learning & Relationships

At Compass Independent School, social and emotional learning grows from a deep sense of belonging and an emphasis on building respectful, caring relationships with other children and young people, teachers, and the school community.

Students are supported to be themselves and encouraged to support others with empathy and kindness.

This requires children and young people to:

  • be willing and able to build and maintain positive friendships;

  • respect and accept differences and include others;

  • express themselves respectfully and safely in both discussions and disagreements;

  • draw on a range of range of problem solving strategies to self-regulate; and

  • know when to ask for help from adults when significant social and emotional challenges arise.

Outdoor Learning and Community Excursions

At Compass, children and young people spend time learning outside every day, including play, sport and creative activities.

For Prep to Year 6, this involves daily walks to nearby parklands for around 90 minutes of outdoor learning and play with teachers and qualified guides.

From Year 7 onwards, young people regularly participate in off-campus activities, such as visiting parks, shops, museums and community spaces. This involved walking or using public transport. At times, they may be in small groups in the local area without direct supervision (e.g. at lunch or during independent activities).

Our outdoor program requires children and young people to:

  • take responsibility for their belongings and wellbeing (e.g. hat, water, sunscreen);

  • follow safety expectations;

  • stay with their group;

  • interact appropriately with others; and

  • make safe and respectful choices at all times.

Navigating learning together

Is Compass right for you?

Open to being curious, creative and collaborative?

Fair, caring, open-minded and respectful?

Learning at Compass is guided by our four compass points: Inquire, Play, Create and Collaborate.

An openness to embracing these compass points in ways tailored specifically to teens is essential.

We prioritise well-being, sense of self and interpersonal relationships through our core values: Be Fair, Caring, Open-minded, Respectful and Be Me.

Alignment with these values is key, as we must work together to help each person develop socially and emotionally and to experience positive and healthy relationships.

Willing to make important decisions and be accountable for them?

Looking to pursue your own interests AND to step out of your comfort zone?

At Compass, young people share decisions about what they will learn, when and how.

Voice and choice in learning empower ownership of the educational journey and require responsibility and active participation.

Learning happens through engagement with inquiry prompts, questions, problems and interest areas.

This approach enables each person to pursue meaningful learning in areas of interest and areas for growth.
